Rustic stone

Crazy paving, Palladiana, tumbled tiles, squared stone, setts, wall strips, pebbles and garden rocks: the stone of southern Italian courtyards, farmhouses and pool decks, already worked and ready on pallets.

What it is

Stone that never becomes a slab

Not all stone ends up as polished slabs. Thin beds, pieces of uneven thickness and offcuts become yard products: split, sawn on the back, tumbled. They are what Mediterranean outdoor floors and stone walls are made of, and they are bought by the square metre, not by the slab.

The two most requested stones are Trani stone, the pale Apulian limestone quarried a few kilometres from our office, and travertine, which keeps its natural holes on show once tumbled. Alongside them are warm-toned natural stones, from cream to gold, and pebbles.

The photos show the real stone, close up. Rustic stone varies from lot to lot, in tone and in markings: at quotation stage you choose from the lot available.

The trade terms

Seven words to read the product sheets

Each product's name lists the working it has received, and that decides how the stone is laid. In the product details, underlined terms explain themselves.

Sawn back
The back of each piece is sawn flat. The thickness is even, so the stone can be laid in tile adhesive instead of a deep mortar bed.
Tumbled
The pieces turn in a drum with water and abrasives: the edges round off and the face takes on the worn look of a centuries-old floor. It is also less slippery.
Split face
The face or edge is split with a guillotine rather than sawn, leaving the stone's natural fracture, rough and in relief.
Bush-hammered
The face is struck with a bush hammer, a hammer with a pointed head: it turns rough and matt, with a fine grain that does not slip.
Sawn edges
The sides are sawn straight, so the pieces butt together with a thin, even joint.
Natural cleft
The face the stone shows when it splits along its own beds: no working at all, and the best grip underfoot.
Random lengths
Fixed or graded height, free length. The pieces are laid in staggered horizontal courses.

How to order

From the pallet to the site

By area, on pallets

Quantities are worked out on the area to cover; for pebbles, also on the depth of the layer. Crazy paving needs a waste allowance, usually 5 to 10%. Flags and strips travel on pallets inside a wire-mesh crate; pebbles in baskets.

A sample before the order

Tone, markings and thickness change from one lot to the next. Before ordering you can ask for a sample of the lot available, and decide on the real stone.

Italy and worldwide

We coordinate loading, paperwork and transport: full trucks within Italy and Europe, containers for shipments by sea. One point of contact from order to delivery.
