The slabs

Size and figure, selection by selection

Three selections photographed in the same setting at the same scale: Etna's grey and black and Basaltina from Bagnoregio. Slabs are sawn from shapeless blocks and their size depends on the block; the formats here are those of first-choice slabs on the market, 260 × 160 cm for Etna and 250 × 130 cm for Basaltina.

Slab of Pietra Lavica dell'Etna Grigia

Pietra Lavica dell'Etna Grigia

260 × 160 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

An even mid grey with a fine grain of light and dark specks and small pores: it is honed Etna lava stone, the basalt of Etna's lava flows quarried around Belpasso, Camporotondo and Biancavilla (Catania). It is extracted in shapeless blocks, which are squared and sawn into slabs; the deeper the quarry, the more compact and lighter the stone.

Slab of Pietra Lavica dell'Etna Nera

Pietra Lavica dell'Etna Nera

260 × 160 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

The darkest selection of Etna lava stone: a full anthracite black, with a barely perceptible very fine grain. The colour ranges from grey to black depending on the lava flow and the finish, and polished or brushed surfaces darken further; the black is chosen for kitchen worktops, bathrooms and furniture surfaces.

Slab of Basaltina di Bagnoregio

Basaltina di Bagnoregio

250 × 130 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Classico type: an even neutral mid grey with Basaltina's typical horizontal layering, fine streaks and pores stretched in the direction of the lava flow. It is a basalt from the Vulsini hills, quarried at Ponzano near Bagnoregio (Viterbo); its slabs are smaller than Etna's, usually up to 250 × 130 cm, with lots up to 305 × 178. There is also a Selcino type, with random, non-directional porosity.

About the stone

Lava stone is basalt of volcanic origin, quarried from the lava flows of Mount Etna in the province of Catania. Its colour ranges from mid grey to anthracite black, with a fine grain and tiny pores; it withstands thermal shock, frost and acids better than almost any other natural stone, which is why it is the historic material of Sicilian street paving. From Lazio comes Basaltina from Bagnoregio, a grey basalt from the Vulsini volcanic district, recognisable by its horizontal layering. Today it is worked in slabs for floors, stairs, façades and kitchen worktops, and can be hand-glazed for high-end furniture surfaces.

Installed

How it behaves once laid

Stone changes with the surface it covers: on a continuous wall the figure reads in full, on a floor you walk across it. These are reference settings.
