Biancone di Trani
The palest selection of Trani stone: a compact ivory limestone, the material Apulian architecture is built from.

The livelier selection of Trani stone: a warm ground with brown blooms and markings.

The slabs
Four selections of the same bed, photographed in the same scene at the same scale, ordered from the one that blooms least to the one that blooms most. In the Apricena basin the size is not the variable: the block reaches 315×170 cm and slabs come out 100-120 cm high. What changes is how much of the stone's making you can see under the surface.

300 × 115 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick
The palest selection: an almost white ground densely scattered with shell fragments, calcareous algae and small fossil sections. Busy up close, calm over a large surface — and the Fiorito that travels most.
Request this selection: Fiorito Adriatico tipo TF
300 × 115 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick
The bloom itself: across the cream ground appear cloudings and rosy patches — the «fioriture» the stone is named for — with bioclasts scattered through them. Cut against the bed.

300 × 115 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick
The steadiest and most uniform selection: a pale cream ground of very fine grain with the bloom barely showing. Chosen where Fiorito is wanted for its colour and not for its figure.
Request this selection: Fiorito Classico
300 × 115 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick
A rosier ground, warmer and darker than the other three, crossed by a sparse net of fine rust-coloured threads. It is the grade that comes closest to Filetto Rosso, and the most animated of the set.
Request this selection: Fiorito tipo SGFiorito is one of the four base varieties of the Apricena basin — with Biancone, Serpeggiante and Bronzetto — and the one in which the stone shows where it came from: a biomicritic limestone full of bioclasts, calcareous algae, gastropods and bivalves that surface on the pale ground as rosy patches and cloudings. These are the «fioriture» it is named for. The trade also calls it Trani Fiorito. The same hardness and frost resistance as Biancone: the difference is that here the material tells you its origin instead of hiding it.
How the finish changes the stone
Installed
Stone changes with the surface it covers: on a continuous wall the figure reads in full, on a floor you walk across it. These are reference settings.
