The slabs

Size and figure, selection by selection

Four basins, four stones under one name, photographed in the same setting at the same scale. Here, unlike the Apricena stone, the size is a real variable: Custonaci gives slabs up to 180 cm high, Ruvo di Puglia stops at 140. In the rack the difference in format reads just as the difference in tone does — from Svevo, almost white, to Royal, the most densely pearled.

Slab of Perlato Svevo

Perlato Svevo

300 × 140 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

The palest of the four: an almost white ivory ground with sparse, low-contrast pearling and a few fine stylolites. Quarried at Ruvo di Puglia, it is the Perlato from home ground — hard and frost-resistant, which is why it is the one that goes outdoors.

Slab of Perlato di Sicilia

Perlato di Sicilia

300 × 180 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A warm ivory ground with larger, more widely spaced pearls, crossed by a pale brown vein that recalls Botticino. It comes from Custonaci (TP), the basin that gives the tallest slabs — up to 180 cm, which is what you want when cladding has to rise without intermediate courses.

Slab of Perlato Royal

Perlato Royal

305 × 143 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

The densest pearling of the set: a warm greige ground closely covered with small pale sections, an even figure across the whole slab. Quarried at Coreno Ausonio (FR), it also travels as Perlato Coreno: two trade names for one stone, not two selections.

Slab of Perlato Olimpo

Perlato Olimpo

300 × 170 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

The only veined one: across the pearly ground run straight olive and rust-coloured veins, regular enough for open-book layouts. It comes from Orosei (NU), is a variety of Daino, and is also found as Breccia Sarda.

About the stone

«Perlato» is not a material: it is a character. It is the pale, rounded sections of fossil shell that dot the ground and catch the light like pearls. Four Italian limestones from four different basins have it, and under one trade name they remain different stones: in tone, in how densely they pearl, and in the size of the slab. Perlato Svevo comes from Ruvo di Puglia and is the palest; Perlato di Sicilia from Custonaci, where the basin gives the tallest slabs; Perlato Royal from Coreno Ausonio, and it is the most densely pearled — it also travels as Perlato Coreno, but the quarry is the same one; Perlato Olimpo from Orosei, and it is the only veined one. Anyone ordering «a Perlato» is ordering one of these four: the choice is made on the sample, not on the name.

Installed

How it behaves once laid

Stone changes with the surface it covers: on a continuous wall the figure reads in full, on a floor you walk across it. These are reference settings.
