The slabs

Size and figure, selection by selection

Eighteen onyxes photographed in the same setting at the same scale, from white to black. Sizes are those of real lots on the market: onyx comes from small, irregular blocks, and slabs vary a great deal, from the 225 × 160 cm of Onice Cola to the 304 × 171 of Onice Avorio. Here they are shown under front light; backlighting can be seen in the room settings.

Slab of Onice Bianco

Onice Bianco

280 × 160 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A translucent milk white with pale green-grey glints, a dense crystalline web and a few golden veins. It comes mainly from Iran, and to a lesser extent from Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is the onyx most in demand for backlighting: lit from behind it becomes almost uniform.

Request this selection: Onice Bianco
Slab of Onice Bianco Oro

Onice Bianco Oro

234 × 140 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A milk white in translucent clouds, run through by a web of golden and honey-coloured veins. It is also traded as White Gold; it generally comes from Iran or Türkiye, and the quarry is declared lot by lot. Here it is shown under front light: backlit, the veins turn to gold.

Request this selection: Onice Bianco Oro
Slab of Onice Avorio

Onice Avorio

304 × 171 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A warm ivory in fine, parallel beige and cream bands: a vein-cut onyx, quiet and regular. It is quarried mainly in Türkiye, and partly in Iran. Porcelain and ceramic imitations are sold under the same name: the one below is stone.

Request this selection: Onice Avorio
Slab of Onice Miele

Onice Miele

255 × 170 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

An amber honey with brown clouds and rings, paler crystalline clusters and a few dark threads. The onyx par excellence: it is quarried in Iran, and Mexican and Turkish lots also arrive under the same name. Here it is shown under front light; backlit it turns to glowing amber.

Request this selection: Onice Miele
Slab of Onice Cappuccino

Onice Cappuccino

290 × 190 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A light golden honey with large, faint concentric rings and a net of fine white veins. It is an Iranian onyx, paler and more even than Onice Miele. Slabs arrive mesh-backed and resin-treated, polished for book-matching: they are usually sold in even numbers.

Request this selection: Onice Cappuccino
Slab of Onice Arancio

Onice Arancio

290 × 180 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A full orange in concentric circles, with white and pale blue bands following the rings. It is quarried in Iran, in North Khorasan around Bojnord. Cross-cut it shows whole rings; it is one of the most theatrical onyxes to backlight.

Request this selection: Onice Arancio
Slab of Onice Rosa

Onice Rosa

277 × 196 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A sugared-almond pink in large plain fields, enclosed by a crystalline white web. It is quarried in Iran, at Naqadeh in West Azerbaijan, and is among the rarest onyxes: the quarries yield little, and the price is above average.

Request this selection: Onice Rosa
Slab of Onice Rosso

Onice Rosso

250 × 120 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A red-orange in wavy bands, with white, cream and burgundy layers: iron oxides give it its colour. It is quarried in Iran, in limited quantities and in small blocks, which give shorter slabs than other onyxes.

Request this selection: Onice Rosso
Slab of Onice Fantastico

Onice Fantastico

280 × 142 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Parallel bands of brick red, burgundy, cream and white, vein-cut. It is one of the rarest onyxes: blocks are few and vary greatly in colour from one to the next, and they are always resin-treated before cutting. Sources disagree on its origin, between Mexico, Pakistan and Türkiye, and the same onyx also travels as Rosso Vaticano: the quarry is declared lot by lot.

Request this selection: Onice Fantastico
Slab of Onice Viola

Onice Viola

295 × 131 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A burgundy leaning towards violet, in clouds and twisted bands with pink and rust glints. Stones of different origins travel under this name, Iran, Pakistan and Tanzania: the quarry is declared lot by lot, and the figure changes with the direction of the cut.

Slab of Onice Marrone

Onice Marrone

250 × 160 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Wavy brown, caramel and amber bands with white layers: a vein-cut onyx with a very lively figure. The name is generic: brown onyx comes mainly from Iran and Pakistan, and origin is declared lot by lot.

Request this selection: Onice Marrone
Slab of Onice Cola

Onice Cola

225 × 160 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A deep cola brown, with honey «eyes», cream patches and pale veins. It is quarried in Iran, where it is also sold as Persian Cola. It is among the darkest onyxes: backlit, it turns to deep amber. Small blocks, and slabs shorter than average.

Request this selection: Onice Cola
Slab of Onice Arcobaleno

Onice Arcobaleno

236 × 170 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Wavy grey, cream, white and vivid orange bands: the multicoloured onyx par excellence. Iranian, Pakistani and Turkish stones of different shades travel under this name; the one below is the Iranian multicolour type, and origin is declared lot by lot.

Request this selection: Onice Arcobaleno
Slab of Onice Verde

Onice Verde

272 × 170 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A light apple green with dark green veins and a few rust threads. It is quarried in Pakistan, in Balochistan, and in Afghanistan. It is among the brightest onyxes to backlight; the shade ranges from apple green to grey-green depending on the block.

Request this selection: Onice Verde
Slab of Onice Smeraldo

Onice Smeraldo

270 × 120 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Wavy bands of emerald green, brown and cream, vein-cut. It is quarried in Iran, in the Damghan area. It is a fragile onyx: slabs arrive mesh-backed and resin-treated, and the blocks give long, narrow slabs.

Request this selection: Onice Smeraldo
Slab of Onice Blu

Onice Blu

232 × 150 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Sky blue and blue-grey in clouds, with crystalline white patches and a few golden veins. It is quarried in Iran and Pakistan. In nature the blue is soft: the very vivid shades seen around are often enhanced, so confirmation that the stone is untreated is requested on the lot.

Request this selection: Onice Blu
Slab of Onice Grigio

Onice Grigio

272 × 159 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Parallel grey, pearl and honey bands, vein-cut: the most architectural of the onyxes. It is quarried in Türkiye, and its transparency suits backlit elements.

Request this selection: Onice Grigio
Slab of Onice Nero

Onice Nero

302 × 157 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

An almost black anthracite with dense, sinuous white and grey waves. It is a dark selection of Iranian grey onyx, also sold as Persian Black Onyx: it lets far less light through than the others and is chosen for its surface, not for backlighting.

About the stone

Onyx for cladding is a calcium carbonate deposited in successive bands, not the chalcedony of jewellery that shares its name. Its unique property is light transmission: backlit with LED panels, an onyx slab becomes a glowing surface with a living pattern. Almost all onyx on the market comes from Iran, then from Türkiye, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the same quarry gives different shades from one block to the next. It is a fragile material: slabs arrive mesh-backed and resin-treated, are worked on a backing and are chosen one by one, often book-matched. It is for interiors, away from acids.

How it behaves once laid
