The slabs

Size and figure, selection by selection

Eleven creams photographed in the same setting at the same scale: first Spanish Crema Marfil, then the Italians, from Apulia, Sicily and Sardinia, then the imports from west to east, from Portugal to Egypt. Sizes are those of real lots on the market; Trani is sold in random lengths and has the height of its bed, about one and a half metres.

Slab of Crema Marfil

Crema Marfil

292 × 163 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

The family's reference: a light, even cream ground, slightly warmer cloudings and very fine veins. It is quarried on Monte Coto, in the province of Alicante, and is sold by grade, from Extra to Standard, according to the evenness of the ground and the amount of veining.

Slab of Trani Bronzetto

Trani Bronzetto

310 × 150 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Trani stone in its warm version: a light beige ground with rare soft veins and a few pinkish threads. It is a compact, low-absorption limestone that withstands frost, and in Apulia it has been used outdoors for centuries, for stairs, thresholds and paving. Like Biancone it comes from beds about 160 cm high, and is sold in random lengths.

Slab of Crema Avorio

Crema Avorio

300 × 175 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A warm ivory ground crossed by a dense network of fine yellow-brown veins, caused by iron oxides and clays. It is the Sicilian marble quarried alongside Perlato in the Custonaci basin (TP), also known as Avorio venato. A Croatian limestone and Spanish Crema Marfil also travel under the same name: origin is declared lot by lot.

Slab of Perlatino di Sicilia

Perlatino di Sicilia

300 × 175 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

Perlato's younger sibling: the same ivory ground, but the fossil sections are smaller and denser, and the veins run parallel to the cut. It is quarried at Custonaci (TP), from the same two-to-three-metre blocks as Perlato, and is also supplied resin-treated.

Slab of Perlato di Sicilia

Perlato di Sicilia

300 × 180 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A warm ivory ground with its “pearls”, sections of fossil shells, larger and more widely spaced than in Perlatino, and a light brown vein. It comes from Custonaci (TP) and also appears on the Perlato page alongside the other basins.

Slab of Daino Reale

Daino Reale

276 × 195 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A warm beige crossed by nearly horizontal bands and veins in taupe and old rose, which open beautifully when book-matched. It is quarried at Orosei (NU) in Sardinia, the same basin as Perlato Olimpo, and is also found as Breccia Sarda.

Slab of Moca Crema

Moca Crema

279 × 165 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A Portuguese limestone with a light beige ground and a fine, dense grain that, when vein-cut, draws slightly darker parallel striations. It is quarried between Alcanede and Porto de Mós, in central Portugal, is also found as Relvinha, and is sold by grain: fine, medium or coarse.

Slab of Crema Imperiale

Crema Imperiale

270 × 170 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

An intense, even cream with barely hinted warm cloudings. It is a compact limestone from Istria, in Croatia, sold as marble: variation from slab to slab is limited, which is why it is chosen for large continuous surfaces.

Slab of Vratza

Vratza

300 × 170 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

The lightest of the family: an almost uniform pale cream with rare tiny fossils. It is a limestone from the Vratsa region, in north-western Bulgaria, that comes out in large blocks, over three metres, and is sold by grade according to the evenness of the ground.

Request this selection: Vratza
Slab of Burdur Beige

Burdur Beige

260 × 160 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A light cream with fine white veins and a few warmer veils: the lightest and brightest of the Turkish creams. It is quarried in the province of Burdur, in south-western Anatolia, and is sold by selection: the lightest, most even ones cost more.

Slab of Galala

Galala

280 × 160 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A light, warm cream, almost without veins, with small lighter patches. It is a limestone from the Galala massif, on the Gulf of Suez, sold as marble: the most widespread Egyptian cream, with a tone that varies from quarry to quarry, from cream to milk white.

About the stone

The cream family brings together marbles and limestones with a light, warm beige ground, almost uniform or lightly veined. Spanish Crema Marfil is the family's reference. In Italy cream stone comes from three basins: Apulia, with Trani Bronzetto; Sicily, where Avorio, Perlatino and Perlato are quarried at Custonaci; and Sardinia, with Daino Reale from Orosei. From abroad come Portuguese Moca, Istrian Crema Imperiale, Bulgarian Vratza, Turkish Burdur Beige and Egyptian Galala. These stones warm a room and sit naturally alongside pale timber and brass; the most compact limestones, such as Trani stone, also go outdoors.

Installed

How it behaves once laid

Stone changes with the surface it covers: on a continuous wall the figure reads in full, on a floor you walk across it. These are reference settings.
