The slabs

Size and figure, selection by selection

Seven greens photographed in the same setting at the same scale: first the three from the Aosta Valley, then France, Greece, Iran and China. Sizes are those of real lots on the market: the Aosta serpentinites come from medium or small blocks, and Verde Issorie gives the shortest slabs.

Slab of Verde Alpi

Verde Alpi

290 × 150 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A deep dark green, almost black in the darkest areas, crossed by a network of white and pale green veins. It is not a marble but a serpentinite, an ophicalcite from the Aosta Valley quarried between Verrayes and Saint-Denis; in its dark selections it is also sold as Verde Rameggiato. It is the most classic Italian green.

Slab of Verde Alpi Chiaro

Verde Alpi Chiaro

245 × 153 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

The brightest selection of Verde Alpi: bottle green with darker patches, white veins and areas mottled with light green. The same Aosta Valley quarries, where the light selections take different names depending on the quarry; blocks are medium-sized and slabs shorter.

Slab of Verde Issorie

Verde Issorie

250 × 120 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

An intense, brecciated green: dark serpentine fragments set in a dense web of white calcite veins, with broad lighter bands. It comes from the Aosta Valley, between Châtillon and Issogne; blocks are small and the average slab stops at around two and a half metres.

Slab of Vert d'Estours

Vert d'Estours

295 × 155 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A light sage green in oblique bands, lighter and darker, with a dense, regular grain: a brecciated crystalline limestone cemented by green chlorite. It is quarried at Seix, in the Estours valley, in the French Pyrenees (Ariège), and is mostly used honed.

Slab of Verde Antico

Verde Antico

270 × 150 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

An almost black green broken into fragments by a dense network of white and cream veins: the serpentine breccia of Thessaly, in Greece, already used by the Romans. It is quarried around Larissa; green breccias of other origins also travel under the same name, and the quarry is declared lot by lot.

Slab of Verde Antigua

Verde Antigua

295 × 178 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

A light aqua green crossed by parallel grey-green waves and by sharp white veins that cut across them. It is an Iranian marble, the lightest and brightest of the family, and when book-matched it draws very graphic walls.

Slab of Verde Ming

Verde Ming

240 × 160 cm2 cm and 3 cm thick

An olive and apple green with a dense web of darker veins and a few light crystal patches. It is quarried in China, in Liaoning, around Dandong, and is also known as Ming Green: the warmest green of the family, which pairs well with wood.

About the stone

Green marbles are almost all serpentinites and breccias: rocks with a green ground, from aqua green to almost-black green, crossed by a network of white calcite veins. The Italian reference is Verde Alpi from the Aosta Valley, with its selections from darkest to lightest, and Verde Issorie. From abroad come Vert d'Estours from the Pyrenees, Greek Verde Antico, the breccia already used by the Romans, Iranian Verde Antigua and Chinese Verde Ming. Serpentinites are sensitive to water during installation: they require specific adhesives and proper workmanship.

Installed

How it behaves once laid

Stone changes with the surface it covers: on a continuous wall the figure reads in full, on a floor you walk across it. These are reference settings.
